Unit plan rough draft

 

    For my unit plan Ive chosen The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. This is a book I've read twice now, and with it being a book centered around the holocaust I think there are a boat load of different things that can be taught along side this book. Its conveniently split up into 88 chapters, so with a 4 week unit plan each week will have 22 chapters of required reading


Week 1: Chapters 1-22

Activity that teaches about Axis and Allied forces In WWII

Week 4: Chapters 66-88

Finish book discussion

Learn about Adolf Hitler along with other world leaders both negative and positive

The Class Canon and Cancel Culture

     This is such a tough discussion because it requires us to try and picture the perfect society. What to we keep and what do we get rid of to reach this utopia of ideas and learning.    “When you teach works like Woody Allen’s you’re normalizing and romanticizing the culture of abuse he was part of,” I can see this being true only in the scenario that after viewing Woodys work you think mimicking his decisions will be what improves for work to his  standard. I think media gives us too much information on peoples lives, and I think if great world leaders acted more like the wizard of oz and kept everything behind a veil we'd see kids that felt more inspired to live out their own stories instead of comparing significant events in their lives they'd compare the work they are creating. The Girl Who Drank The Moon

[Spoiler Alert]      Kelly Barnhill's children and young adult novel The Girl Who Drank The Moon.  Is a strong coming of age story about Luna,  a young girl left out in the woods as an infant. Luna is taken in by a Witch who accidentally feed her magic, as a result Luna is en-magicked. Throughout the novel the theme of sorrow is repeated over and over. Xan, the witch in the story constantly repeats to herself and others that sorrow is dangerous, stay away from sorrow. As it turns out Xan too was discovered in the words as an infant and brought to a castle of magicians who en-magicked her. As a young girl she is taught the message that sorrow is dangerous. I think this idea of sorrow in the book plays on the idea that sorrow can drown you into a world of hopelessness where you give up and don't seek to fix what's been done or what's happening.  Dear Kelly,     I have been reading your splendid book The Girl Who Drank the Moon. I find it so fascinating that despite the age of Xan and Glerk these characters I feel can really connect with young mothers. There is so much to be learned from the beauty of these character. It is a story that asks to look inward for what is love, and all things beautiful. I really do believe that this story could be like a beacon of light for many young mothers in todays world.  My name is Lane Oberg, I am a young animator and feel inspired to create a short pilot to push this story being brought to a new audience through the power of visual story telling.
